When we talk about flooring tools, we’re referring to the diverse range of equipment that helps you accurately measure, cut, and install various flooring types. The right tools are your best friends in ensuring a seamless and successful flooring installation.
Different flooring types, such as luxury vinyl plank or hardwood, require different tools. For instance, a “floated”vinyl plank installation won’t need nailers or glue because planks can be clicked into place right over the subfloor. However, installing hardwood will require some kind of adhesive or nails to keep planks securely in place. Having the right tools is crucial to achieving the results you want. For more specific tool requirements and tips for your specific flooring type, check out our detailed installation guides.
Hand Tools: Simple, non-power tools used manually.
Power Tools: Tools powered by an external source, providing efficiency and precision.
Measuring and Layout Tools: Ensure accurate measurements and layouts for a flawless finish.
#1: Tape Measure
Importance of Accurate Measurements: A reliable tape measure is vital for ensuring that your flooring fits perfectly within your space.
How to Choose the Right Tape Measure: Look for a durable, retractable measure with a locking mechanism for convenience.
#2: Safety Gear
Knee Pads: Essential for a more comfortable project and injury prevention during long hours of installation.
Safety Glasses, Gloves, and Ear Protection: Essential for safeguarding against potential injuries.
Protecting Yourself While Working: Always prioritize your safety by using adequate protective gear.
#3: Utility Knife
Versatility of a Utility Knife: Ideal for cutting materials with precision. When working with CALI Vinyl flooring you can use a utility knife to score planks where you need to make a cut and then snap the extra length off by hand.
Safety Tips for Using One: Use with caution, and always retract the blade when not in use.
Extra Blades: Have some spare blades on hand to replace ones that get worn down and keep your cuts clean and efficient.
#4: Chalk Line
Creating Straight Reference Lines: Essential for maintaining alignment during installation.
Different Types of Chalk Lines: This depends on your preference. There are various options including reel and snap lines.
#5: Hammer & Tapping Block
Types of Hammers for Flooring: A rubber mallet is usually preferable to avoid damage to the flooring material. Pick a mallet that isn’t black so that you don’t leave marks on the floor that will have to be cleaned off later.
Proper Hammering Techniques: Use gentle, controlled strokes to avoid damage to materials. We recommend using a tapping block or a spare piece of flooring to deliver a softer and more even strike.
#6: Speed Square
Making a Straight Cut: Use a speed square to ensure you’re cutting planks in a straight line. This is especially useful when scoring vinyl planks with a utility knife before snapping off unwanted length.
#7: Flooring Nailer
Types of Nailers:Select based on flooring type; consult CALI’s installation guides for specifics.
Nailing Techniques: It’s important to follow manufacturer instructions for optimal results.
#8: Jigsaw
Precision Cutting for Irregular Shapes: Provides flexibility for intricate cuts.
Safety Tips for Jigsaw Use: Follow user manuals closely and always wear appropriate safety gear.
#9: Trowel
Spreading Adhesive: Essential for even application of flooring glue and moisture barrier.
Proper Trowel Selection: Consider the size and type of the flooring planks when choosing a trowel.
#10: Spacers
Maintaining Expansion Gaps: Spacers are crucial to ensure proper expansion gaps are maintained during installation, allowing the flooring to expand and contract with temperature fluctuations without causing damage or warping.
Proper Spacer Use: Place spacers between the flooring and the wall and remove them once the installation is complete. The size of the spacer used will depend on the specific flooring type, so be sure to refer back to our installation guides for accurate details.
